The Organization:

The Wade Edwards Foundation and its more visible project, the Wade Edwards Learning Lab (WELL), were established 15 years ago in memory of Wade Edwards, son of John and Elizabeth Edwards. Housed near Broughton High School, the WELL serves Wake County high school students in an afternoon computer technology program. The after-school program provides access to computer technology, academic support, homework management, and tutoring to high school students in need of such services. A variety of enrichment and support programs are ongoing and are conducted by a small staff at the WELL. The organization is currently working with a John Rex Endowment Capacity Building Initiative grant for Board and Staff Development, which will include the strategic planning process. WEF-WELL has an annual operating budget of approximately $300,000.

Position Overview:

This is a newly configured position that will serve as the primary leadership position for the organization, and will be responsible for its management, development, growth, and future direction. The new Director will report directly to the 12-member Board of Trustees, which meets quarterly. This position will be responsible for a number of administrative and management duties with the assistance of staff, but will chiefly be charged with moving the organization to its greatest potential with the resources available while conducting outreach to assist the organization in growth. Some of the daily management responsibilities will include supervision and coaching of staff, program evaluation and improvement, budget development and management, and engaging the broader community to create support and involvement. Salary is commensurate with experience; benefit package included.

The candidate filling this position should be enthusiastic about assuming a new role and open to changes as the role and responsibilities may evolve over time through practice and evaluation. Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Must have proven leadership and management skills, excellent communication skills, and be able to represent the organization positively to the education community, the general public, and other non-profit organizations within the community
  • Must possess a strong work ethic, be able to work flexible hours, and present a strong role model for the primarily youthful staff
  • Must believe in working as a team and take a collaborative approach in engaging and working with staff, volunteers, students, clients, and the Board to achieve desired results
  • Must be familiar with basic personnel management tenets, relevant General Statutes and other issues and rules regarding working with teen populations

Eligibility:

Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years working in the nonprofit or philanthropy sector; master’s degree or certificate in Non-Profit Management or Public Administration preferred. Applicants must have strong computer skills. Preference will be given to candidates with substantial experience in non-profit management or a related field coupled with experience in education and middle/high schools; strong references required.
