The Organization

North Carolina Opera was formed in 2010 from the merger of Capital Opera Raleigh and The Opera Company of North Carolina. It is dedicated to presenting operatic performances at the highest level throughout the Triangle. We also have a robust education program that brings opera to schools across Wake County and surrounding counties. North Carolina Opera brings international level artists to Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, and also engages the best in local Triangle talent.

The company is led by General Director Eric Mitchko, and Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Timothy Myers. Through their leadership and vision, NC Opera provides the community with a stellar product, able to mount both large-scale and more intimate productions in a variety of venues across the Triangle, with casts that feature the finest singers from the world’s opera stages, as well as emerging talent from across the state. In its first three seasons, the company has presented ten productions, including four local premieres. The company continues to offer cutting edge programming and community engagement and education activities throughout the region, and frequently collaborates with many other cultural and performing arts organizations.

NCO’s will announce its upcoming season on July 29th. In addition to its mainstage productions, NC Opera also hosts engaging “POpera” performances in various settings in the local community, the popular “A Taste of Opera” dinner and discussion series, fascinating master classes, entertaining “Opera in the Schools” programs for children, and a festive annual gala. These diverse offerings have quickly made NC Opera a key contributor in the Triangle’s performing arts repertoire.

The Area

The Triangle region of North Carolina includes Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, and is an area of outstanding resources where cultural and performing arts organizations thrive. In addition to the NC Opera, major institutions include the North Carolina Symphony, North Carolina Museum of Art, North Carolina Museum of History, Marbles Kids Museum, Ackland Art Museum, Nasher Museum of Art, Museum of Natural Sciences, Morehead Planetarium, Carolina Ballet, North Carolina Theatre and American Dance Festival. The many colleges and universities in the region also contribute to the quality of the local artistic community.

The Candidate

The Company Manager, reporting directly to the General Director, is responsible for the day-to-day administrative operations of the organization, including bookkeeping, contract administration, guest artist arrangements, and reconciliation of tickets sales. In addition, the Company manager is responsible for managing and promoting the education program, by contacting schools, promoting the shows, and managing the contracts.

The successful candidate will have meticulous approach to their work. He or she will be trustworthy and honest, with good community relations skills. This person must have strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

The successful candidate must be approachable, personable and genuine, with a strong sense of integrity. The ability to manage multiple priorities with tight timelines and limited resources is essential.

The Position

This is a great opportunity for the new Company Manager to work to continue the organization’s recent growth and create a lasting impact. At this time, the position is projected to require an average of 25 hours of work per week. In this role, the Company Manager will be part of a core team responsible for strengthening and enhancing the current organizational mission, and, under the direction of the General Director, provide oversight and support of identified tasks and initiatives.

Essential duties and responsibilities of the position include the following:

Bookkeeping

  • Complete all accounts receivable and accounts payable entries into bookkeeping system; coordinate with contracted accountant
  • Prepare payments and cut checks
  • Reconcile ticket sales

Contracts Administration

  • Provide oversight and support for all contracts, including guest artists’
  • Coordinate travel and lodging arrangements for guest artists

Program Management

  • Manage education program through contacting schools, promoting the shows, and managing contracts

Performance will be evaluated after the first 90 days of employment, then on an annual basis.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent
  • 5+ years’ professional experience, preferably administrative experience in a nonprofit organization
  • Solid bookkeeping and contracts administration experience; knowledge of QuickBooks is essential.
  • Knowledge of GAAP
  • Excellent computer software skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills. Ability to assume professional responsibilities as directed and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Effective and courteous interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; oral and written English fluency, including accuracy in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects in various stages of progress, each with a unique timeline, maintaining attention to detail
  • Genuine interest in opera, performing arts, and/or music.
