The Organization

Marbles Kids Museum is a vibrant and growing non-profit children’s museum and IMAX Theatre in downtown Raleigh with over 550,000 annual visitors. Since opening as Marbles in September 2007, our popularity and community support has increased steadily. Now at our three-year mark, Marbles seeks an energetic development professional to expand our fundraising efforts to advance our institutional goals and maximize our community impact.

Job Purpose:

The Director of Development is responsible for designing and implementing an ongoing development program aimed at generating sustained operating and program support including annual gifts, major and planned giving, institutional grants and sponsorships of specific exhibits, programs, and special events. The Director of Development works closely with the president, Board of Directors and Development Committee to achieve annual and long-range development goals in support of the organizational strategic plan.

Job Description:

  • Directs all fundraising efforts, including donor research and database management, cultivation, solicitation, recognition and appreciation, grants-writing, evaluation and reporting;
  • Works with staff and Board of Directors to identify resources needed to carry out the mission in line with the organization’s immediate project plans and overall strategic plan;
  • Leads development of all fundraising materials, communications and messaging, with design and production support from the marketing team;
  • Maintains strong community relationships to build organizational awareness and support, identify potential partnerships and expand connections;
  • Engages members of the Board of Directors and other volunteer committees in support of development effort;
  • Serves on the Senior Management Team to promote and protect a resourceful non-profit culture within the organization, to collaborate on key decisions and to help orchestrate an integrated and collaborative operational approach;
  • Provides supervision and leadership to the Development Assistant through strategic communications, training, evaluations and support;
  • Ensures compliance with all funding requirements, legal rules and regulations, tax laws and professional fundraising standards.

Qualifications and Special Skills:

  • College degree and five years experience in fundraising, with at least two years in a management capacity;
  • Demonstrated strengths in generating sustained operating support, major gifts fundraising and grants writing, with a current knowledge of local, state and national corporate, foundation, and individual donors and a proven capability to research and prospect new donors;
  • Innovative thinker who thrives on translating big ideas into concrete strategies that produce results;
  • Energetic individual who embraces and projects creativity and imagination, and places high value on nurturing happy vibrant communities that support and celebrate children;
  • Strong management and organizational abilities, with aptitude and eagerness to manage multiple priorities with tight deadlines in an energetic and creative team environment;
  • Excellent communicator, with outstanding written, verbal and presentation skills, and a natural ability to navigate and manage the personal and professional relationships required for successful fundraising;
  • Dedicated team player and proven leader with ability to work effectively with staff, board members, and outside professional contacts;
  • Proficient in technology, particularly in donor database software, Microsoft Office software and social media.

The target compensation for the Director of Development is an annual salary of $60,000 plus a strong benefits package, contingent on qualifications and experience.
