Founded as a community-based art cinema in 2010, a/perture cinema transitioned to become a nonprofit organization in 2017 with the mission to engage and entertain the community through the art of film by showcasing informative, educational, thought-provoking, and inspiring films – films that enrich our lives, engage our minds, promote diversity, and build community. In addition to presenting daily film programming, a/perture advocates for film education and provides varied, inclusive opportunities to deepen, strengthen and diversify connections to the cinema and filmmaking experience. As the region’s only nonprofit arthouse cinema, a/perture cinema, builds an inclusive and welcoming culture and ensures that our cinema is everyone’s cinema. a/perture screens first-run independent and studio, documentary, world cinema and repertory films along with special events, filmmaker visits, outdoor cinema and several other community facing programs.>

Job Statement:

The Deputy Director assists the Executive Director and Curator with the responsibilities inherent in the management of a/perture cinema and can act in the Executive Director’s capacity when the Executive Director is absent or in need of support. The Deputy Director responds to the day-to-day needs of a/perture cinema with a focus on operations, resource development and leadership including but not limited to, internal and external relationship building, fundraising and providing financial and human resource support. This role will seek and create opportunities to help build the capacity as an organization and help set a new strategic vision for the mission-based work..

Duties and Responsibilities:

Administration and Operations

  • Support the Executive Director in building a flexible organization with a sustainable infrastructure, policies, operations, and practices that are successful and consistent with strategic priorities.
  • Provide daily oversight of office, theaters, and other facilities, including box office management and maintenance of equipment, technology and digital platforms working closely with the Executive Director and with support from Theater Manager.
  • Develop an engaged, inclusive team of staff, in a manner that instills equity, ownership, partnership, achievement, and results with exceptional customer service and outstanding patron experience.

Fundraising and Resource Development

  • Work in partnership with the Executive Director to design, implement, lead and grow a/perture’s annual fundraising efforts and membership program including prospect research, cultivation strategies, events, campaigns, donor solicitation and stewardship, as well as some grant writing and management.
  • Create short and long-term opportunities through collaboration, communications, and outreach with current and potential partners and the community at-large.
  • Assist Executive Director with preparation for a/perture Board of Directors meetings and identify, train, and manage Board to assist in development activities as needed.
  • Recruit, retain, and onboard a diverse team of volunteers to support a/perture as needed operationally and for special projects and.

Financial Management and Support

  • Work alongside Executive Director in the finance areas of budgeting, monitoring, and reporting and forecasting for internal and external parties including Board of Directors, funders, and other granting entities.
  • Manage HR and payroll functions with support of outsourced bookkeeping contractor and payroll service providers.

Public Engagement

  • Represent a/perture at community events, board meetings, film programs and other events as needed either alongside or an absence of Executive Director.
  • Collaborate with Executive Director to create and implement community programs, experiences and resources for patrons, members, partners, and the public

Qualifications:

a/perture is accepting applications from candidates at all experience levels and education backgrounds. The following are preferred qualifications:

  • Alignment with the mission and values of a/perture cinema.
  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 or more years of full-time non-profit work with fundraising experience or demonstrated sales and operations experience at a for-profit entity.
  • Experience engaging stakeholders, constituents, donors, and partners.
  • Experience supervising full-time and part-time staff as well as the ability to work with diverse groups.
  • Excellent oral and communication skills with attention to detail and organizational abilities that include planning, delegating and project management.
  • Strong computer skills with MS Office, Canva, WordPress and donor management systems.
  • Knowledge of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County community a plus.
  • Some evenings and weekends are required

Compensation and Benefits:

The target hiring salary for this position is $60,000-$67,000, dependent on qualifications and experience. a/perture offers an annual health stipend for salaried employees of $3,600/year. Paid time off, sick leave and professional development are also offered. Opportunities for occasional remote work.
